As a mom I like to think that in general I am more on top of things than not on top of things. I read and pick up the information sent home from daycare in a timely manner. I schedule the yearly checkups at the doctor and have kept up with immunizations. We wash behind the ears and brush teeth twice a day. I pack a sweater. Typically I feel like I have most things under control.
Meredith and I have been talking about taking some sort of classes, so I’ve been asking her what she wants to do. Dance is #1, so I’ve looked into dance classes and we’ll be ready to go with that for the fall. Maybe soccer or tennis she says. Through all of this discussion, Meredith kept saying “Mommy, I want to sign up for phonics.” I just laughed, aw, how cute. Where did she hear such a thing? Phonics! Ha ha ha!
Meredith kept insisting that she wanted to sign up for phonics and then clarified at school (daycare). I assumed she was referring to something the older children were doing. She is often in with the bigger kids in the mornings and afternoons at day care. Finally, after much persistence by Meredith, I asked the teachers. You don’t happen to have a phonics class, do you? “Oh, with Ms. Marsha?” Apparently there IS a phonics class. Ms. Marsha comes around and pulls the kids who have signed up (and paid an extra fee of course) out to work one on one on letter recognition, listening skills, writing and yes phonics. Meredith started this week and she could not be more thrilled. She has a workbook with her own name on it and worksheets to take home and keeps asking to do more with Ms. Marsha so she spent 40 minutes with her instead of the typical 20 to 30.
I missed the boat on this one. Since she is only in daycare 3 days a week I do sometimes gloss over the programs that typically occur on days she isn’t in the center (or for an extra fee). Thankfully all is squared away and we are back in the loop and she couldn’t be happier. I better start filling out those financial aid forms for college now!
