Sports and kids are a funny thing. We spend a lot of time as parents teaching the following lessons: Share, Wait Your Turn, Give the other kids a turn, Be Patient, Be Nice. Then you put 4 and 5 year olds on a soccer field and it all goes out the window.
The interesting thing about Meredith’s team this year, The Little Einsteins, is that they were still following the parental rules, not the sports rules. And, really, you gotta love ‘em for that. However, when you get out on the field and the ball is sitting there, for heaven’s sake, someone KICK THE BALL! STEAL IT FROM THE OTHER KID! KICK HARDER! Yes, I had my soccer mom moment this season. I’m not proud. It happens to the best of us. Luckily it didn’t take me long to correct myself and realize, yes, they are 4 & 5. We are lucky if they know which direction their goal is, to stop when they kick it out of bounds, or “out of balance” as Meredith has been saying.
Overall, she had fun- which, I guess, is more important than winning. Her team mates and their parents were all very nice and she has now met 2-3 kids who will be at her same school starting kindergarten next year. So, score!
