Lions and Tigers and Bears- OH MY!

Meredith and I took a trip to the zoo a couple of weeks ago. We go pretty often with our zoo membership. It’s nice, because we pick a few things we want to see- which for Meredith always includes riding the carousel, train ride, and boat ride. The animals are secondary to her.

Our zoo had a baby elephant born about 2 years ago, so we check in to see how much he has grown. We checked out a few other animals and Meredith asked if it was a boy or girl. I said I didn’t know, and asked her if she knew how we could tell. I figured this was a good opportunity to start discussing the proper names for body parts and how to tell boys from girls. It hasn’t come up in any official way before. She said that boys had a little something down there. I asked her if she knew what that was called and she said “Yes. A hang nail.”

I managed not to laugh and we talked about the proper names. Later, it came up again- wanting to know if an animal was a boy or girl. I figured it was a good time to reinforce our lesson for the day, to which Meredith replied, “Mom! Do we have to keep talking about this?” No, no we don’t.
