Me-ow

We had a fairly quiet start to 2013, without too much craziness in January and February.  March has now come and gone and things are ramping up again for the end of the school year.
Our biggest excitement lately is the addition of a new family member.  Ava, furry feline, joined our family on Sat. March 16.

We journeyed out to look at kittens mostly that Saturday with me, Frank, Meredith and my sister all on the hunt.  We ended up finding Ava at the humane society, which sort of worked out well because their fee is lower and they do same day adoptions.

Ms. Ava had just arrived there a week and a half before.  She was found as a stray on someone’s back porch.  She went through the entire medical rigor- tests, vaccinations, microchip, and being spayed only 3 days before we got her.  They estimate she is 1 ½, but she’s so tiny at only 6 lbs. that she seems younger.

She is the sweetest cat.  I’ve never had a lap cat before and she curled up the first day on our laps.  She likes to “plop”- come over by you, get some pets, and then just collapses into a cuddle.

Night 2 of cat ownership her incision site was oozing and not looking so healthy.  We had to take her to the vet anyway for a check within 5 days of adoption, so off I took her.  She had an infection in the incision site and got an antibiotic shot.  It was recommended we keep a baby shirt on her to keep her from licking the infection and delaying healing.

Day 4 of cat ownership and our second visit to the vet.  I got home from work and she had wiggled out of the shirt and a stitch on her belly was just flapping in the breeze.  Poor Ava got a staple and the cone of shame- for 8 days!  We were definitely off to a rough start.

Even with all of the crazy adjustment she’s such a good girl.  She let me put a cone on her head.  The other cats we’ve had- that would’ve never happened.

Oh, and through most of this, Frank was on vacation with his parents and siblings in Las Vegas.

I’m glad to say she’s fully healed now, playful, cuddly, and still named Ava.  The name she came with at the humane society was Eva, but we pronounced it Ava.  According to Meredith, that’s her name.  I tried to talk her into Belle, Minnie, Skittles, KitKat- but Ava it is.
